Airworthiness Directive 99-16-09
one-timeAirworthiness Directives; Bell Helicopter Textron Canada Model 230 Helicopters
What this AD requires
This amendment adopts a new airworthiness directive (AD) that is applicable to Bell Helicopter Textron Canada (BHTC) Model 230 helicopters. This action requires verifying the torque on the vertical fin attachment bolts (bolts); inspecting the vertical fin and tailboom fittings for cracks, elongation of bolt holes, distortion and corrosion; and re-verifying the torque on the bolts after inspecting the fittings. This amendment is prompted by a report of a loose vertical fin, which was discovered during a post-flight inspection. The actions specified in this AD are intended to prevent loss of torque of the bolts, which could lead to fracture of the bolts, separation of the vertical fin from the helicopter, and loss of control of the helicopter.
Which aircraft AD 99-16-09 applies to
Applies to helicopters with vertical fin attachment bolts. Verify bolt torque within 25 hr TIS per Bell Helicopter Textron Alert Service Bulletin No. 230-98-14, Revision A, dated June 9, 1998 (ASB); inspect vertical fin fitting and tail boom fitting for cracks, elongated bolt holes, distortion, and corrosion by the next 150-hr TIS inspection; if bolt-hole elongation found, incorporate modifications per Bell Technical Bulletin No. 230-98-23, Revision A, dated July 1, 1998; re-verify bolt torque 5-10 hr TIS after inspection; recurring torque verification every 150 hr TIS thereafter. Model designation '230' inferred from the referenced Service/Technical Bulletin number prefix (230-98-xx); not stated verbatim as 'Model 230' in the captured applicability text.
Whether AD 99-16-09 actually applies to your aircraft (by serial and installed parts) and whether it’s already complied with comes from that aircraft’s records.
How AD compliance is recorded
A valid compliance record (14 CFR 43.9) states:
Tailplate reads a tail number’s logbooks and matches every applicable AD — including this one — to its compliance evidence, with recurring next-due dates computed.
Look up a tail number →Read the full directive (Federal Register)Applicability is derived from the FAA directive corpus and is advisory, not a legal airworthiness determination. Compliance is established only from an aircraft’s actual records.
