Airworthiness Directive 98-07-18
one-timeAirworthiness Directives; Pilatus Aircraft Ltd. Models PC-12 and PC-12/45 Airplanes
What this AD requires
This amendment adopts a new airworthiness directive (AD) that applies to certain Pilatus Aircraft Ltd. (Pilatus) Models PC-12 and PC- 12/45 airplanes. This AD requires replacing certain propeller de-icing controllers with ones that are not susceptible to electromagnetic interference (EMI). This AD is the result of mandatory continuing airworthiness information (MCAI) issued by the airworthiness authority for Switzerland. The actions specified by this AD are intended to prevent improper operation of the propeller de-icing controller caused by EMI, which could result in ice build-up on the propeller with possible airplane controllability problems.
Which aircraft AD 98-07-18 applies to
Specific airplane model not stated in provided applicability text. Applies to affected airplanes with a propeller de-icing controller, P/N 968.29.13.223 (BFG 4E3163-1) or FAA-approved equivalent (including PMA-by-equivalency parts), installed. Serial range given is for the controller unit, not the airframe. Within next 9 calendar months after effective date, identify the controller serial number; if S/N U999 or lower and not marked 'SB30-1', replace with P/N 500.50.12.109 (BFG SB4E3163-1-30-1), per Pilatus SB No. 30-002 (Aug 19, 1996). As of effective date, prohibited to install a controller with S/N U999 or lower not marked 'SB30-1' on any affected airplane. Prevents improper de-icing controller operation from electromagnetic interference, risking propeller ice build-up.
Whether AD 98-07-18 actually applies to your aircraft (by serial and installed parts) and whether it’s already complied with comes from that aircraft’s records.
How AD compliance is recorded
A valid compliance record (14 CFR 43.9) states:
Tailplate reads a tail number’s logbooks and matches every applicable AD — including this one — to its compliance evidence, with recurring next-due dates computed.
Look up a tail number →Read the full directive (Federal Register)Applicability is derived from the FAA directive corpus and is advisory, not a legal airworthiness determination. Compliance is established only from an aircraft’s actual records.
