Airworthiness Directive 98-12-32
one-timeAirworthiness Directives; CFM International CFM56-2, -2A, -2B, - 3, -3B, and -3C Series Turbofan Engines
What this AD requires
This amendment adopts a new airworthiness directive (AD), applicable to CFM International (CFMI) CFM56-2, -2A, -2B, -3, -3B, and -3C series turbofan engines, that requires a one-time eddy current inspection (ECI) for cracks or gouges in certain high pressure turbine rotor (HPTR) disks. This amendment is prompted by a report of a HPTR disk found to have a crack in a rim bolt hole during a routine shop manual ECI. The actions specified by this AD are intended to prevent the potential for an uncontained failure of the HPTR disk, which could result in an inflight engine shutdown, aborted takeoff, or damage to the aircraft.
Which aircraft AD 98-12-32 applies to
Installed on but not limited to McDonnell Douglas DC-8 series, Boeing 737 series, as well as Boeing E-3, E-6, and KC-135 (military) series aircraft.
Whether AD 98-12-32 actually applies to your aircraft (by serial and installed parts) and whether it’s already complied with comes from that aircraft’s records.
How AD compliance is recorded
A valid compliance record (14 CFR 43.9) states:
Tailplate reads a tail number’s logbooks and matches every applicable AD — including this one — to its compliance evidence, with recurring next-due dates computed.
Look up a tail number →Read the full directive (Federal Register)Applicability is derived from the FAA directive corpus and is advisory, not a legal airworthiness determination. Compliance is established only from an aircraft’s actual records.
