Airworthiness Directives; Aviat Aircraft, Inc. Models S-1S, S-1T, S-2, S-2A, S-2S, and S-2B Airplanes (Formerly Known as Pitts Models S- 1S, S-1T, S-2, S-2A, S-2S, and S-2B Airplanes)

What this AD requires

This amendment revises AD 96-12-03, which applies to Aviat Aircraft, Inc. (Aviat) Models S-1S, S-1T, S-2, S-2S, and S-2B airplanes that are equipped with aft lower fuselage wing attach fittings incorporating either part number (P/N) 76090, 2-2107-1, or 1-210-102. That AD currently requires repetitively inspecting the aft lower fuselage wing attach fitting on both wings for cracks, and modifying any cracked aft lower fuselage wing attach fitting. Modifying both aft lower fuselage wing attach fittings eliminates the repetitive inspection requirement of AD 96-12-03. Aviat recently started incorporating modified aft lower fuselage wing attach fittings on newly manufactured airplanes. This AD retains the requirements of AD 96-12- 03, but exempts airplanes that had the modified aft lower fuselage wing attach fittings incorporated at manufacture. The actions specified by this AD are intended to prevent possible in-flight separation of the wing from the airplane caused by a cracked fuselage wing attach fitting.

Repetitive inspection. Re-inspect every 50 hours. The next-due date/hours depend on this aircraft’s time in service — a records report computes it from the logbooks.

Which aircraft AD 97-17-07 applies to

MakesAviat Aircraft Inc.

Addresses cracking of the aft lower fuselage wing attach fitting (both wings) per Aviat SB No. 25 (dated Apr 3 1996, Rev Nov 12 1996); repetitive 50-hr TIS inspections apply until the SB No. 25 modification is installed, which terminates the repetitive inspection. The specific affected model list is not present in the extracted applicability window (only the standard modified/altered/repaired boilerplate note was captured).

Whether AD 97-17-07 actually applies to your aircraft (by serial and installed parts) and whether it’s already complied with comes from that aircraft’s records.

How AD compliance is recorded

A valid compliance record (14 CFR 43.9) states:

Method of complianceThe specific action taken (inspected, replaced, modified) and to what revision.
DateWhen the work was done.
Aircraft timeTotal time in service / tach at compliance — how recurring next-due is computed.
Signature & certificateThe A&P/IA who returned it to service, with certificate number.
Is AD 97-17-07 complied with on your aircraft?

Tailplate reads a tail number’s logbooks and matches every applicable AD — including this one — to its compliance evidence, with recurring next-due dates computed.

Applicability is derived from the FAA directive corpus and is advisory, not a legal airworthiness determination. Compliance is established only from an aircraft’s actual records.
