Airworthiness Directives; Saab AB, Saab Aeronautics (Type Certificate Previously Held by Saab AB, Saab Aerosystems) Airplanes

What this AD requires

We are adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for certain Saab AB, Saab Aeronautics Model 340A (SAAB/SF340A) and SAAB 340B airplanes. This AD was prompted by reports of ruptured horizontal stabilizer de-icing boots. This AD requires a revision of the applicable airplane flight manual (AFM), repetitive inspections of the horizontal stabilizer de-icing boots, and applicable corrective actions. We are issuing this AD to detect and correct damage of the de- icing boot; such damage could lead to a ruptured boot, severe vibrations, and possible reduced control of the airplane.

Repetitive inspection. Re-inspect every 400 hours. The next-due date/hours depend on this aircraft’s time in service — a records report computes it from the logbooks.

Serial-conditional — narrows to serials 004–138, 139–159, 160–459.

Type certificate previously held by Saab AB, Saab Aerosystems. Also known as SAAB/SF340A (340A, S/Ns 004-159) and SAAB 340B (S/Ns 160-459). For 340A S/Ns 004-138, applies where Saab Modification 1462 has been embodied in production or Saab Service Bulletin 340-55-008 embodied in service, except those with Saab Modification 1793 also embodied in production or Service Bulletin 340-55-010 embodied in service; those Post-1462/Pre-1793 airplanes have a maximum flap setting of 35 degrees instead of 20 degrees and horizontal stabilizer boots with spanwise tubes instead of chordwise tubes.

Whether AD 2016-14871 actually applies to your aircraft (by serial and installed parts) and whether it’s already complied with comes from that aircraft’s records.

How AD compliance is recorded

A valid compliance record (14 CFR 43.9) states:

Method of complianceThe specific action taken (inspected, replaced, modified) and to what revision.
DateWhen the work was done.
Aircraft timeTotal time in service / tach at compliance — how recurring next-due is computed.
Signature & certificateThe A&P/IA who returned it to service, with certificate number.
Is AD 2016-14871 complied with on your aircraft?

Tailplate reads a tail number’s logbooks and matches every applicable AD — including this one — to its compliance evidence, with recurring next-due dates computed.

Applicability is derived from the FAA directive corpus and is advisory, not a legal airworthiness determination. Compliance is established only from an aircraft’s actual records.
