Airworthiness Directives; McDonnell Douglas Model MD-11 and -11F Airplanes Equipped With United Technologies Pratt & Whitney Engines

What this AD requires

This amendment adopts a new airworthiness directive (AD), applicable to certain McDonnell Douglas Model MD-11 and -11F airplanes, that requires replacing the wire harness support bracket of the integrated drive generator (IDG) of the forward engine mounts with a new support bracket, and modifying the angle of the bracket near the oil filter. The actions specified by this AD are intended to prevent arcing of the IDG wire harness, which could result in smoke and/or fire in the area of the forward engine mount bolt retainer and/or fire detector responder. This action is intended to address the identified unsafe condition.

As of the effective date, Pratt & Whitney PW4460/PW4462 engine buildup units with neutral quick-engine-change (QEC cum units 4 through 240, serial numbers 5166001-5213003) may not be installed on any airplane unless the wire-harness bracket replacement/modification required by paragraph (a) has been done.

Whether AD 2002-14-10 actually applies to your aircraft (by serial and installed parts) and whether it’s already complied with comes from that aircraft’s records.

How AD compliance is recorded

A valid compliance record (14 CFR 43.9) states:

Method of complianceThe specific action taken (inspected, replaced, modified) and to what revision.
DateWhen the work was done.
Aircraft timeTotal time in service / tach at compliance — how recurring next-due is computed.
Signature & certificateThe A&P/IA who returned it to service, with certificate number.
Is AD 2002-14-10 complied with on your aircraft?

Tailplate reads a tail number’s logbooks and matches every applicable AD — including this one — to its compliance evidence, with recurring next-due dates computed.

Applicability is derived from the FAA directive corpus and is advisory, not a legal airworthiness determination. Compliance is established only from an aircraft’s actual records.
