Airworthiness Directives; Honeywell International, Inc., (Formerly AlliedSignal, Inc., Textron Lycoming, Avco Lycoming, and Lycoming) Former Military T53 Series Turboshaft Engines

What this AD requires

This amendment adopts a new airworthiness directive (AD), that is applicable to Honeywell International, Inc., (formerly AlliedSignal, Inc., Textron Lycoming, Avco Lycoming, and Lycoming) former military T53 series turboshaft engines. This amendment requires conducting a revised operating cycle count (prorate) and initial and repetitive inspections for cracks of centrifugal compressor impellers. This amendment is prompted by a report of a military surplus helicopter that experienced low-cycle fatigue failure of the centrifugal compressor impeller, resulting in an uncontained engine failure. The actions specified by this AD are intended to prevent centrifugal compressor impeller failure, which can result in an uncontained engine failure, in-flight engine shutdown, or damage to the helicopter.

Repetitive inspection. Re-inspect. The next-due date/hours depend on this aircraft’s time in service — a records report computes it from the logbooks.

Requires a revised centrifugal-compressor-impeller operating cycle count (prorate) per Honeywell/AlliedSignal SBs T53-L-13B-0020 Rev 3, T53-L-13B/D-0020 Rev 1, and T53-L-703-0020 Rev 1, followed by removal of impellers exceeding the revised life limit; also requires repetitive inspections of impellers P/N 1-100-078-07 and 1-100-078-08 per SB T53-L-13B/D/703-0108 Rev 1, at intervals based on cycles-in-service, to prevent centrifugal compressor impeller failure.
